Scotland: National Rural NetworkIn the Scottish National Rural Network regional event in West Lothian recently, the issues around youth unemployment were raised a couple of times. Youth unemployment, particularly in rural areas, has risen during the economic downturn. This came up in David Greaves' presentation on West Lothian LEADER, which has youth as one of their target groups.
The Fauldhouse Community Development Trust gave one of the project presentations at the event. Again, the issue of youth unemployment was raised. The organisation is undertaking a project this year in partnership with West Lothian Council. Through the Future Jobs Fund they will be offering paid trainee placements in a woodland environment. Ms Sedman, Development Officer with the Community Development Trust, said it was important that the placements were jobs and the trainees getting paid rather than benefits.
