Networks - Gateway to Ayrshire Network? Robert Burns International Airport?

In the south west of Scotland, is there a Gateway to Ayrshire Network: networking all of the Gateways to Ayrshire from Dalbeattie in the southwest to Muirkirk in the east to Skelmorlie in the north west; or Gateway to Dumfries & Galloway Network: networking all of the Gateways to D&G from Cairnryan to Carsphairn to Gretna; or a Burns Corridor Network: Containing all the towns, villages and farms connected with Robert Burns, from Alloway to Gretna, within Ayrshire, Kirkcudbrightshire and Dumfriesshire?

None that you know of? Why not?

How many smaller settlements would benefit from networking?

Does anyone know how many iconic figures are within Burns Corridor? http://burnscorridor.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=12 Surely this iconic tract could be used to attract tourists if handled correctly. Made even more attractive if the south west Scotland airport were to be renamed "the Robert Burns International Airport, Prestwick".

Robert Burns International

Posted on the Robert Burns International Airport, Prestwick Campaign on Facebook 7th July 2011: Kenneth Gibson Msp Quote:"I have written to Infratil Ltd asking them to consider renaming Prestwick Airport 'Robert Burns International Airport'. I will keep you posted when I receive a response.

"I also lodged the following motion in the Scottish Parliament. This has received the support of 23 MSPs." Motion S4M-00109 - Kenneth Gibson ( Cunninghame North ) ( Scottish National Party ) : Rename Glasgow Prestwick Robert Burns International Airport That the Parliament supports the campaign to rename Glasgow Prestwick International Airport, as Robert Burns International Airport in honour and memory of Scotland’s national bard; believes that the life and works of Robert Burns play a significant role in attracting tourists to Scotland and, as such, believes that the international airport in Burns’ homeland of Ayrshire should be renamed to reflect this; notes that an online campaign to rename the airport has attracted 6,000 supporters, highlighting significant support for the proposal; believes that Scotland should be proud of its national icons, and calls on the owners and shareholders of the airport to rename Glasgow Prestwick in order to help promote Scotland's rich culture and heritage around the world and help attract more visitors to Scotland via their airport. Supported in Scottish Parliament by: Kenneth Gibson MSP for Cunninghame North; Paul Wheelhouse, MSP for South of Scotland; Richard Lyle, MSP for Central Scotland; Mike MacKenzie, MSP for the Highlands and Islands; Stewart Maxwell, MSP for West Scotland; Bill Kidd, MSP for Glasgow Anniesland; Maureen Watt, MSP for the North East of Scotland; Christina McKelvie, for Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse; John Finnie MSP for Highlands and Islands; Fiona McLeod, MSP for Strathkelvin and Bearsden; Colin Beattie, MSP for Midlothian North and Musselburgh; Kevin Stewart MSP for Aberdeen Central; James Dornan, MSP for Glasgow Cathcart; Joan McAlpine, MSP for South of Scotland; John Wilson MSP for Central Scotland Region; Patricia Ferguson, MSP for Maryhill & Springburn; Roderick Campbell, MSP for North East Fife; Gil Paterson, MSP Clydebank and Milngavie; Elaine Murray, MSP Dumfriesshire; Chic Brodie, MSP for South of Scotland; John Scott, MSP for Ayr; William Coffey, MSP for Kilmarnock; Aileen McLeod, MSP for South of Scotland; Stuart McMillan, MSP for West of Scotland."

Prestwick more like Elvis airport!

Prestwick Airport becoming the Robert Burns airport would seem much more fitting than their current obsession with Elvis. They've got that relatively new Elvis bar there, because the singer once passed through the airport! And much as I like Elvis, surely visitors to the country would rather have a wee drink in a Robert Burns bar?!

International Gateway to Scotland

You're so right Teresa. The new £21million Robert Burns Birthplace Museum is now up and running, less than 10 miles from the Ayrshire airport. Would it not make sense to promote this fact? The Robert Burns International Airport, Prestwick Ayrshire: Gateway to Burns. The man voted Scotland's Greatest Scot Ever in 2010, Scotland's Bard, the Ayrshire Ploughman Poet?
We could promote - Elvis: the Star O' Rabbie Burns International http://www.flickr.com/photos/batteryboy1/2267191632/ and/or Elvis: the Bar o' Rabbie Burns International?
A bit tacky but what the Hell was Pure dead Brilliant and the colour theme?

Laugh and the World will laugh with us.

I have decided to see the funny side of Glasgow and graffiti on Prestwick Airport.

Funny because Glasgow has to keep all it's friends and 'Pure Dead Brilliant' because no-one really remembers why this is funny.

Since I have understood that none of the people who could convince the owners to change their minds have bothered with either the petition or the other references to name change throughout the internet, why should we give it another thought.

There are more interesting projects. Crawick Artland, Gretna Landmark, Robert de Bruce Memorial, Warrior O' Westlin' Winds, Sir William Wallace Visitor Centre, Sir William Wallace Statue, Archway to Ayrshire Visitor Centre are all in addition to the Birthplace Museum.

The new Observatory in the Dark Sky Park received full support and funding. Who is it named to?

We are busy enough with all of this to let the airport be called whatever it is.

The airport is passed through in minutes. Any of the above will be stood in front of and explored for hours.

The destination travellers arrive at and the rail link suggests Glasgow at present.

None of the above are in Glasgow. Paisley is the nearest for Sir Wallace.

Let Glasgow and the New Zealand owners miss the point.

The joke is at their expense.

For their lack of belief and their city attitude.

Why do we all live in Ayrshire?

Because on a day like today people travel miles to have what we have every day by just walking outside.

The Celestial Navigator sculpture suggests a visit to the Dark Sky Park as does the man with wings.

Both were school projects.

Are our young people clairscentients?

I finish as I said in the subject line.

Would Rabbie agree?

Best wishes.

Alex.
