Scotland: National Rural NetworkMoray Heritage Connections is exploring the development of a Moray wide service for locals and tourists interested in Family History research. A project is underway, funded by the Moray LEADER Programme and The Moray Council, to investigate how all interested groups can work co-operatively to share their resources and expertise.
Moray Heritage Connections is a group of museums and heritage groups working together to promote and encourage interest in Moray’s rich history and heritage. For this project we have also been consulting with Family History Societies, the Registrar’s Service, and Moray Tourism Development.
We plan to identify what information, training or equipment is needed to make it easier for people to find out who their ancestors were, how they lived, and where they were born or buried. Moray has fantastic collections of photographs and archive documents, as well as the memories of locals, which can really bring the past to life.
We would like to hear from any organisation or business in Moray that is involved in providing advice to ancestral tourists, be it bed and breakfasts, community group or tour guide. We would also be keen to hear from other communities who have developed a service and would be willing to give advice on what works well for them.
If you are interested in finding out more about the project and how to get involved, get in touch with Valerie Wardlaw, Visitor Development Officer for Moray Council Museums Service on 01309 696261 or email valerie.wardlaw@moray.gov.uk
