100 Best Things on Scotland's Islands

Italian Chapel, OrkneyThis is the year of Scotland's Islands and to celebrate we're asking you to tell us about your favourite island experiences - this could be anything from the best beach to the best music festival. You can tell us about your favourite island produce, your favourite ferry journey or your favourite historic monument.

The year of Scotland's Islands is a programme of events and activities to showcase the islands' vibrant cultures and creativity, natural environment and quality produce.

Whatever your favourite island experience is, we want to hear about it! We're expecting well known attractions and hidden gems to make the list. We also expect to get many more than 100 and won't put a limit on the number of contributions. At the end of the feature we'll compile a list of 100 best things on the islands!

Off the beaten track on Eigg in Jan 2012

'A cold, blue skied day, with buffeting grey swedges of grey cloud across the Atlantic's expanse, exposed across horizon's sights. A walk into the interior of Eigg greets a mirage set by the slanting winter sun, masquerading autumnal colours of burnished, bronzed bracken sitting snug in the bogs and moor. Black rushing water, deeply pooled in places, faces white rushed flows over rocks, streaming to a vantage point high on the cliff above Laig. This Western Bay, itself reached after careful consideration of burnt umber rockslid paths is turquoise in its hue, seeding and seeking the deeper and darkening indigo of wider waters across to Rums blue peaks.'

Sounds wonderful

Thanks for posting - sounds beautiful!

Comment from Facebook - Eoropie beach

Scotland's Islands- best things. I agree that they all have something very magical. I would like to offer Eoropie beach as the sun is setting in the west. The short walk to the beach is across a rich carpet of machair flower and through majestic dunes. The beach is a long wide sweep of golden sand, and the waves are always exciting. You look north and west and know there is nothing but ocean for miles and miles. Louis

Everything about Unst in the summer

Comment from Stephanie Gray on Facebook:

Everything about Unst in summer. The intoxicating scent of freshly mown hay, the light, the microclimate. Watching the weather sweep across the hills. Lurcher chasing rabbits on a deserted beach at Westing. The romance of graveyards. Watching gannets learning to fly at Burrafirth. The fascinating behaviour of sheep. Wonderful storytelling. These are but a few of the things I simply love about Unst. Just a few.

Plane to Barra

I've been thinking about what I would add to the list as there are so many things in the islands to enjoy - and there are lots of islands I haven't even visited yet!

My suggestion would be the plane to Barra which lands on the beach. The plane is very small and you can see the pilot and co-pilot. In fact, it reminds me of a plane from an Indiana Jones film! Flying low over the islands is an amazing experience - the colour of the water and the beautiful beaches are spectacular. And then you get to land on a beach and walk over the sand to the airport!

Papay

from Carolynda Sayers on Facebook

Papay has to be it for me....has the beaches, the views, the tranquility, the puffins and selkies and whales and oh my word...what a place to see the Northern Lights transform the sky in colour!!!! Amazing!!!!!

Rackwick Bay

From Lesley Clark on Facebook:

Has to be Rackwick Bay on the island of hoy, orkney with its gorgeous cliffs, squeaky sand, magnificent huge round colourful boulders and peace and tranquility with the sea rolling in and views out over to north scotland paradise on a gorgeous summers day

Sumburgh Head

From Lorna Whittle on Facebook:

Has to be Sumburgh Head, Shetland. Beauitful scenery, more puffins than you ever thought was possible and great for whale watching!

Hoy, Orkney

Enjoyed a fabulous trip to Hoy and camped at Rackwick. The rollers coming in were awesome and we were entertained by the selkies playing in the surf along the shore line. The bothy is a comforting sight although we did not actually need to use it for shelter. In the morning you could see the misty spray from the waves floating up over the beach, magical. Real wild camping in a beautiful place.

Islay

Comment from Ian Ross on LinkedIn:

Just back from a week on Islay - Fantastic when the sun came out!
The distilleries are a must and the local beer is not that bad, The annual Islay Beach Rugby is a hoot - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8pC0twhCb0, Portnahaven must be one of the most idylllic wee harbours in Scotland, Machir Beach on the west coast must rank up there with Achmelvic as one of Scotlands best beachs

Sailing and berthing in the harbour at Rothesay on Bute (or taking the ferry), visiting Mount Stuart, cycling to Kilchattan Bay, taking the bus around the island, views from the golf course, putting and the little museum in the winter gardens, saying hello to Margaret Zavaroni in her cafe, going to the Jazz Festival in May with great venues and artists performing in places like the original Pavillion and the grounds of Rothesay Castle.

Achnadrish House on Mull and more!

Comment on LinkedIn from Mike Story:

Staying at Achnadrish House on Mull, www.achnadrish.co.uk, eating hand dived scallops, Inverlussa Mussles and our smoked salmon and saffron chowder. Having drams with the labradors at the fireside.

Seals singing on the skerries off Orkney

Comment on LinkedIn from David Smythe

Hearing seals singing on the skerries just off Orkney. It is a weird and haunting sound, particulalry if it is foggy.

Orkney.

The bothy is a comforting sight although we did not actually need to use it for shelter. In the morning you could see the misty spray from the waves floating up over the beach, magical. Real wild camping in a beautiful place. By Regards

Thanks Robert

Lunch at Eilean Iarmain . . .

Comment from Ian Watson on LinkedIn:

One highlight has to be lunch at the Eilean Iarmain followed by a tasting at Prában na Linne next door. Poit Dhubh, for me, please, and perhaps a Té Bheag for the distaff side? Talisker can wait till later in the day!

The Outer Island Hop

Comment from Gail Tunnah on LinkedIn:

Living on Harris I am naturally biased, however each island has a unique culture. One of the most interesting trips I think which I am determined to do on my way to mainland at some point is to do the Outer island hop. Lewis, Harris, Bernaray, Uists, Barra to Oban by ferry. Lewis (Stornoway Black Pudding), Harris (wonderful sea food) Uists (Salar smoked salmon) Hmmmm ....

Comment from Victor Brierley:

The fact that each island is oh so different!

The walk to the Old Man of Hoy, the whole Heart of Orkney World Heritage Site and North Harris' amazing beaches

Full moon shining on Scapa Flow

Contribution on Twitter from @DementedBonxie

Favourite Orkney experience - Full moon shining on Scapa Flow in middle of the night.

Old Man of Hoy / Rackwick

A walk from Rackwick to the Old Man is spectacular and Rackwick itself is possibly the bonniest spot in Orkney.

Glenashdale Falls on Arran

Another comment on LinkedIn from Martha Bryce:

Glenashdale Falls on Arran is a lovely walk (with fab homebaking at The Coffee Pot on the way back down!)

Millport

Comment from LinkedIn:

From Gordon Clark:

Hiring bikes to tour around Millport - a great day out

Mousa in Summer

Comment from @StuartHousden on Twitter:

One of my favourite things is Mousa in Summer, to sit by the Broch as the storm petrels flit in as the Summer dim takes hold

Quiraing - Skye

Amazing sight, and I will get round to walking it...one of these days!

Sunburn on Orkney!

Fabulous holiday this summer on Orkney. Friendliest people and best customer service anywhere. Patsy Walls at Bella Vista not only provided excellent B&B but also personally arranged for stonking weather. Sunburn in Orkney - who'd of thought it!

Tourists well catered for - abundance of interesting interpretative signage but island left unspoilt and open for leisurely walks. Try the Mull Head walk at Deerness. Good quality, tasteful souvenirs. Excellent seafood. Can't wait for next visit

New comment from Twitter

From @SocEntAcademy on Twitter:  For me it's jumping off the dunes on South Lewis' west beaches

Harris coastline (when it's sunny)

Have great memories of driving along the west coast of Harris looking out across white sands and green seas to all the little islands in the distance, with the sea glistening in the sunlight. When the sun shines in Harris, there's no better place.

Gannets on the Bass Rock

Quite a sight ...and smell!

Bressay, Shetland

My Granny - definitely the best thing to come from Shetland! :)

Yesnaby - Orkney

Stormy seas, spectacular cliffs, strong winds... What more could you ask for from an island experience?

Thanks for the suggestions so far!

Thanks for the suggestions so far! Must check out the yurt on Muck, and I hear the World Stone Skimming Championships is great fun - although stone skimming is not one of my strengths!

From the CADISPA Trust on Facebook: Balcony of the Lismore Heritage Centre on a sunny day is probably ours at the moment.

Millport

I just love Isle of Cumbria. Its a 10 min ferry ride from Largs, has fantastic scenery, and the best is the cycle ride around the island. The town of Millport has a lovely beach, with interesting shops, and the island itself creates the atmosphere of being "away on holiday". Great day trip for families:)

Millport memories!

Millport brings back memories of a family trip for a country and western festival in the early nineties! We also cycled round the island which was great fun!

An experience never to be forgotten

The tearoom and yurt on the Isle of Muck. Absolutely amazing !!

Easdale

The World Stone Skimming festival at Easdale is my personal favourite island event: great company, great sport, great food and drink, and great music.
