Kirky Canal

Project part funded by Kelvin Valley LEADER

Starting life as a small open day in 2000 the festival has developed into the largest Canal based event in Scotland, attracting over 25,000 people and significant levels of income into the local economy. The festival is a celebration of the heritage and regeneration of Kirkintilloch and surrounding areas linked by the Forth and Clyde Canal.

LEADER funding was used to:

  • Improve and develop content of new sites like the Southbank Marina
  • Contract event management staff to assist in the improvement and delivery of key sites
  • Improve infrastructure to ensure the festival can support the large amounts of visitor numbers it now attracts (i.e. increased shuttle bus/ park n ride service, larger traffic free areas and more festival marshals and security staff)
  • Increase marketing activity to allow the festival to achieve its 09 visitor growth target of 8-10%
  • Undertake marketing activities
