My favourite sausage would
My favourite sausage would have to be the venison ones my brother in law makes.
What's your favourite sausage?
As a vegan my favourite sausage, indeed my only sasusage, is a meat free one. If land was devoted to growing food for direct human consumption rather than livestock, it would be a much more efficient use of land as well as saving a great deal of unnecessary suffering for the animals involved.
Not really true
Animals can make use of tracts of land that are not suitable for cultivation such as mountainsides. Not all the productive farmland in Europe and the UK is lush pasture. Neither can we grow many of the crops that vegetable protein is derived from in the UK. It all has to be imported from overseas, which creates a massive eco footprint.
Grazing Animals
Tricky subject! You don't have to be a vegan to share some of your concerns. The bottom line is that humans are omnivores and there will always be a demand for meat. The countryside that we cherish is fashioned by grazing animals and without them it would look radically different, but grass fed livestock do go direct for human consumption and that is the healthiest type of meat. My sheep have a great life, they are nurtured and enjoy great sheltered grazing and I certainly don't let them suffer unnecessarily.
Yum!
Edenmill Farm Shop's chunky chorizo sausages. they are great hot, cold, in an exotic casserole or diced with parmesan pasta and chopped basil. Edenmill's naturally grown, grass fed Aberdeen Angus cattle produce fantastic, tender, well hung and tasty meat. What's more, this outfit has a tiny carbon footprint because they work with local farmers. I'll be buying some on saturday at our Wee Green Market in Killearn.
Cumberland Sausage
I went to Cumberland many years ago, tried the famous cumberland sausage and was hooked! Very tasty, a spot spicy. Mind you, any sausage with unusual ingredients is always worth a taste. It's a versatile food item.
Home made is best!
For several years I made my own sausages. Great fun if you have the time and you know exactly what's in them. My favourite was chilli venison.
Now where did I put the sausage maker?
Munros in Dingwall
My favourite sausages are from one of my local butchers - Munros in Dingwall. My favourites are a spicy pork one that they do. Also very good are their wild boar sausages.
There is nothing better than a white roll with butter and a couple of sausages, maybe a slice of bacon in there too. But this recipe for pan roasted sausages with grapes makes an excellent dinner on a cold evening! http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/7607/sticky-panroasted-sausages-with-grapes
