Communities missing Rural Development Consultation opportunities!

Rural Community Transport imageIf you think the current consultation on the Scottish Rural Development Plan for 2007-2013 is something for farmers only you'd be very wrong.

However, there are worrying signs of a broad - and potentially expensive - misconception amongst rural community groups that the Plan, which covers 'wider rural development', is somehow not for them.

Local activist Anna Barton explained this week:

"I was at a meeting with the Scottish Executive yesterday and they emphasised that the consultation on the proposed 2007-2013 Programme was for everyone with an interest in sustainable development and by no means just farmers and other land managers.

"However, they have had virtually no response from communities so I urge you to highlight the necessity of community reps and individuals to respond to this if they want to be kept in the loop for funding during the next seven years!

"There are obviously going to be huge changes in funding for the voluntary and community sector and the more people who make their views known, the better!

Rural Gateway view

This is a critical consultation for rural communities. We agree wholeheartedly with Anna. Whatever you do, don't do nothing! You still have time to attend (and tell your colleagues) about a number of events across the country where you can have your say and help inform the policy makers' decisions...

Your next opportunity is tomorrow night at Tulloch castle, Dingwall, 7.30 pm. We are hoping to bring a few over from our part of the West Coast to try to make the point that East Coast farmers have serious problems to be addressed, but they are not the only ones living and working in the rural communities of Scotland (and around here you can go for miles without coming across a farm at all - crofting is NOT the same as farming!). Please do come along to and lend your voice to the debate, particularly if you are involved in non-farming rural development, services or business. See you there!
