Work starts on new sustainable home for National Park Authority
Work began recently on the new Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park headquarters in Balloch. Their new home will embody high standards of sustainability with a biomass primary heating system, use of natural materials and a unique indigenous Douglas Fir timber structure. At the pre-contract stage the building achieved an ‘excellent’ BREEAM rating, the industry measure of sustainability.
A formal turf cutting took place on 6 December 2006, performed by Murdoch Cameron MBE, chair of Balloch and Haldane Community Council. Representatives from the Balloch Forum and other key partners joined Park Convenor, Dr Mike Cantlay and the project team for the ceremony.
Deputy Minister for the Environment and Rural Development Rhona Brankin said, “The start of construction work on this impressive new headquarters marks the beginning of an exciting new phase for Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park.
“The state of the art building has been designed to meet the highest sustainable standards and will greatly enhance the natural and cultural heritage of the area for the benefit of the businesses and communities within its boundaries and the many visitors the Park attracts.
"I look forward to visiting the project in early March to witness the next stage when the unique timber frame will be erected.”
The building was designed by award-winning Glasgow architects, Page and Park, and is being built by Central Building Contractors Ltd also of Glasgow. Construction is due for completion in late December 2007, with the National Park Authority moving in in early 2008.
