Coastal and marine national park consultation responses published
They received a total of 940 responses – 171 from organisations and 769 from individuals. 613 responses were in the form of a questionnaire, while 327 people emailed or wrote outlining their views on the consultation questions and other issues.
654 individuals and organisations gave consent for their responses to be published and you can download these responses from the Scottish Executive website.
Summary report published
The Executive have also published a summary report, which Ministers will use to inform their decision. You can download Proposals to Establish Scotland’s First Coastal and Marine National Park: Summary of Consultation Responses from the Rural Gateway documents library.
72% of respondents supported, in principle, the setting up of a coastal and marine national park, while 10% were opposed.
The most popular locations, in order of preference, were found to be the combination of the Argyll islands and coast and the Ardnamurchan, Small Isles and the South Skye coast. Organisations then preferred Shetland, Solway and the Argyll islands and coast in isolation. For individuals, the next most preferred areas were either of the most popular areas in isolation, Solway or Orkney.
Perceived benefits
Respondents felt that the establishment of a coastal and marine national park would bring improved environmental management, sustainable development for the local economy and a better understanding of natural resources.
It was also suggested that a park could bring together the aims of those involved in conservation, sustainable development and public enjoyment. It could also unlock additional funding streams and give a national platform to the needs of fragile communities.
