Executive publish major new policy document

Image of hills and blue skyThe Scottish Executive have published a major new policy document called Rural Scotland: Better Still, Naturally.

The report is described as a stocktake of rural Scotland and some work was also done with stakeholders to explore some possible futures for rural Scotland.

In the Ministerial Foreword, Ross Finnie, Minister for Environment and Rural Development says, "Rural Scotland stands at an important point in its evolution. It is important to take stock – to reflect on what has been done, what more needs to be done and what our collective priorities for action ought to be to ensure that rural Scotland fulfils its potential."

What do you think?

It would be great to hear your reaction to this new policy document. You can download the report from our documents library. Tell us what you think by adding a comment to this article.

Also just published on the Executive website are the Final Report on the Rural Community Gateway Evaluation carried out by Sarah Skerratt (we'll be reading that one closely!) and a report on research commissioned by SEERAD on the Benefits and Costs of Co-locating Services in Rural Scotland. Lots of gripping reading for the Easter holiday there!

Cheap words

The usuall from the Executive about rural issues, fine words and no action or direction. The 2021 unfavourable outcome on page 90 is what we have now, and the favourable contrast is sadly laughable as the assumptions of where we start from are so flawed. The whole thing is another wordy substitute for any real action. Will the last person to leave rural Scotland please turn out the lights.

PS even the sustainable renewable green power sources touted as the "answer" will never be built thanks to the flawed new plannig bill. The whole thing makes me weep in frustration.

A bit plodding

I personally found this report on the rural economy a bit predictable and as usual trying to cover everything whilst coming up with no new and lateral thinking ideas for my area. Except support for the Coastal and Marine National Park which is certainly the biggest opportunity ever to confront the West Coast and Islands.

Lots of pictures in the document are portraying someone enjoying 'Ecotourism' and yet the words Ecotourism are not mentioned once in the entire document !!! Surely when it is a worldwide growth area of tourism we should be in there playing our part, if not leading for a change ? Don't we live in one of the most spectacular and beautiful places on the planet and with hungry customers desperate to enjoy the experience?

The figures for tourism are also as usual ridiculously low when almost every single person in places like Mull are connected to tourism in one way or another from the captain of the ferry down to the local plumber.
