Community engagement book produced by National Park

Image of the front cover of the Community Futures bookSo many people asked the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park about their successful programme of community engagement that they have published a book about it.

Community Futures: Community Engagement in Scotland’s first National Park, written by Colin Roxburgh and Alan Tuffs of the Small Town and Rural Development Group, is a step by step guide to the Park’s Community Futures process of community engagement. It describes how 24 communities in and around the park area got involved in community planning.

The book is very engaging, with a dynamic design that breaks information into easily digested parts, making great use of photos and illustrations. Content is really brought to life by the stories and case studies from the communities who took part in the Park’s community engagement programme.

What is Community Futures?

The Overview section of the book says, "The Community Futures process provides the foundation for a community to try to manage or direct change in its own terms. The aim is to help move a community from a position of being reactive to being more proactive."

In 2006, the Community Futures programme was commended by the Scottish Executive’s "Quality in Planning Awards" under the new category of Community Involvement in Planning.

The book gives information on how the communities prepared their Community Action Plans, the process of participation used to engage people, the resources that were put together to support the communities and the ways in which the planning the communities have done has enabled them to play a strong role in their own sustainable development and shaping the National Park Plan itself.
