Rural In-migrant Business Owners
6-Jun-2007
I am a second year PhD student at the Macaulay Research Institute and
the University of Aberdeen. My research concerns people who
move to rural Scotland and set up a new business or relocate an existing
one. The main foci of the work are to look firstly at why they choose a
particular area, both as a business location and as a new home for
themselves and any family and secondly, what networks people use to help
the growth of their business - whether they be local, external, social
or professional etc. It is hoped that this work will enable a deeper
understanding of migrants' motivations - what draws people into certain
areas - and also of the networks that nurture and support new business
development in rural areas.

I am currently in the process of doing some scoping work to uncover some
of the important issues related to this topic both from a rural business
development perspective as well as from a migration perspective and am
looking to find people who have moved to rural Aberdeenshire and started a business to talk to for my research.
Please contact me (k.davis@macaulay.ac.uk) if you are able to help directly or are able to advise me about any rural in-migrant business owners in your area.
