Rural projects make finals of lottery awards

Logo for National Lottery Awards 2007 Two community projects in rural Scotland have made the finals of the National Lottery Awards 2007, the annual search to find the UK’s favourite Lottery-funded projects.

The Eoropie Dunes Park on Lewis is up for Best Environment Project. This unique play and leisure facility was conceived by a group of mothers whose children had no local playground. Lottery funding helped turn a piece of wasteland into a world class play facility. The project is also up for a Nancy Ovens Trust award.

TYKES, a project for young carers in Sutherland, is up for the Sunday Mirror Award for Best Charity/Voluntary Project. The project was set up in 1999, after research showed that young carers in the area had few options and limited resources.

After a first round of public voting, only three projects remain in each of the following categories:

  • Best Arts Project
  • Best Education Project
  • Best Environment Project
  • Best Health Project
  • Best Heritage Project
  • Best Sports Project
  • The Sunday Mirror Award for Best Charity/Voluntary Project

You can vote for your favourite projects online at the National Lottery Awards website. Voting closes at midday on 31st August 2007.

Each category winner will win £2000 for their project. Winners will be announced on a special BBC1 programme to be aired in the autumn.

Find out more about the projects

Eoropie Dunes and TYKES are to take part in the Rural Gateway’s regular feature Your project in the next couple of weeks, giving further insight into these successful projects.
