Animal movement ban update

Image of cows in fieldFurther amendments have been made to the animal movement ban imposed following an outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease in Surrey.

From midnight on 16th August 2007, farmers have been allowed to move animals with acute welfare problems distances up to 50km and movement of susceptible animals has been permitted, under general licence, up to distances of 8km.

Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and Environment, Richard Lochhead met with key representatives of the livestock industries on 15th August 2007.

He said, "It is clearly a difficult time for everyone involved in farming. I am delighted that we were able to respond to these specific concerns raised at the meeting and get them sorted out.

"We are considering further changes in response to helpful feedback from the industry and it terms of the improving disease picture.

"We will do whatever we can as quickly as we can – as long as it is safe and the right time to do so."

The Scottish Executive Foot and Mouth helpline is available on 0845 155 33 66.
