Image of girl taking books of a library shelf In Off the Shelf, we highlight some recent additions to the Rural Gateway documents library. There are hundreds of documents in our library, from research reports to community newspapers. You can search by keyword or by description, making it easier to find what you need.

Reporting on 100 Days: Moving Scotland Forward

This document reports on the first 100 days of the new Scottish government and their first steps to achieving their objectives. Their aim is to make Scotland a wealthier, fairer, healthier, safer and stronger, smarter and greener country.

The report includes reference to the development of a Road Equivalent Tariff Scheme for ferries, a Scottish Housing Support Fund for first-time buyers and other issues of interest to rural Scotland.

It was a challenging first 100 days, with an outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease and a terrorist attack to contend with. How do you think the government is getting on with moving Scotland forward? And what do you think of this document? Let us know by going to the document and adding a comment.

Impact Assessment of Voluntary Modulation

Scottish Rural Development Programme 2007-2013: Impact Assessment of Voluntary Modulation – Scotland – Total Income from Farming is a concise document with a long title. Published by the Scottish Executive, it looks at the impact that voluntary modulation will have on Scotland’s farmers – their prices, production and cash income.

Voluntary modulation is the transfer of funds from the Single Farm Payment (Pillar 1 of the Common Agricultural Policy) to the Rural Development Fund (Pillar 2 of the Common Agricultural Policy).

Daye Tucker has added a comment to this document pointing people to the Scottish Rural Development Programme 2007-2013 document. She says that "reclaiming voluntary modulation money is not for the faint-hearted". She also thinks policy makers should spend one day a year out of their offices on a real farm.

We’d be interested to hear more of your views on this document and its conclusions. You can do so by going to the document library and adding a comment.

Scottish Mountaineering Incidents Report

The Scottish Mountaineering Incidents Report looked at incidents on Scotland’s mountains in the ten-year period between 1996 and 2005. Mountain rescue teams attended an average of 300 incidents per year, including 25 deaths and 180 injuries.

Navigation was the most commonly cited cause of all incidents, and two-thirds of people involved in accidents could be described as ‘experienced’.
