International spotlight - new VETAID project
Herds, clans and tartan are common to Scotland and Tanzania, but a new project from VETAID will explore the question in more depth.
VETAID is a not-for-profit, international development organisation working for reduction in poverty and increase in food security of people dependent on livestock.
Their new project is aimed at promoting sustainable, small-scale agriculture and livestock development in both Scotland and Africa.
VETAID will work with Scotland's farming and crofting communities, students at Scottish universities and colleges and groups on VETAID's East African projects.
Small scale farmers and communities dependent on livestock will be able to share their experiences and work together to find common solutions to problems.
Conferences will take place twice a year and there will also be exchange visits to encourage the sharing of experience and ideas. The project will work with small scale farmers and crofters in Scotland to explore good practice and find out what support they need.
Students from four of Scotland's agricultural or veterinary training colleges will take place in training about the issues which face small-scale farmers in Scotland and agro-pastoralists in less developed countries. Students will be encouraged to engage in activities to promote sustainable small-scale farming.
Reports, conference reports and press releases will be used to inform and to influence policy makers at local, national and international levels.
