Shetland and Skye in top of sustainable tourism list

The Shetland Isles and the Isle of Skye have been placed in the top six of a National Geographic Traveler survey on the sustainable tourism of islands around the world.

National Geographic Traveler and National Geographic's Centre for Sustainable Destinations conducted this survey with help from George Washington University. A panel of 522 experts in sustainable development and tourism stewardship donated their time to review 111 islands and archipelagos.

Shetland came fourth in the list, with the islands' geology and wildlife valued highly. One panelist said, "These islands have got everything 'with bells on': spectacular sea cliffs; pristine beaches; fascinating geology; over a million breeding seabirds; the highest density of otters in Europe; regular sightings of killer whales; and superb displays of rare sub-Arctic flora."

Another panelist commented, "A unique blend of Scotland and Nordic culture. Somewhat remote, the Shetlands have protected the environment and continue to attract tourists and maintain other sectors (fishing and oil) in harmony."

Survey criteria

Panelists looked at six criteria, weighed according to importance to rate the islands. These were:

  • Environmental and ecological quality
  • Social and cultural integrity
  • Condition of historic buildings and archaeological sites
  • Aesthetic appeal; quality of tourism management
  • Outlook for the future.

Skye also impressed

Skye's cultural heritage and beautiful scenery also impressed the panelists. One said it "combines dramatic mountain and coastal scenery with a vibrant cultural and social scene, and the resurgence of the Gaelic language is a beacon of hope for threatened languages and cultures. Environmental qualities are superb. Traditional arts, design, sport (shinty), and music remain strong."

Survey's top six

The top six islands were:

  • Faroe Islands, Denmark
  • Azores, Portugal
  • Lofoten, Norway
  • Shetland Islands, Scotland
  • Chiloe, Chile
  • Isle of Skye, Scotland
