Rural film makers up for top movie awards

Image of a directors chairThree groups of young film makers from rural Scotland have been nominated for prestigious awards at the First Light Movie Awards 2008. Groups from Islay, Knoydart and Sanday are nominated for different awards, and could be scooping top prizes.

First Light Movies funds and inspires film projects with 5 to 19 year olds throughout the UK. Their annual awards ceremony will take place at the famous Odeon at Leicester Square in London on 4th March 2008.

Nominated films are to be judged by a star-studded panel including Kevin Spacey, Orlando Bloom, Alan Rickman, Stephen Fry, producer Nira Park and directors Sam Mendes, Gurinder Chadha and Michael Winterbottom. Although the under 12 category is down to a public vote.

Good luck to all three groups! You can find more about each film below.

And It’s Goodbye to Care

Nominated in the Best Documentary category this film was made by a group of 11 to 16 year olds from Islay. Their documentary explores their aspirations and emotional attachments to their home island alongside opportunities available to them there.

John Davidson, Chief Executive of Islay and Jura CVS said, "Some costs of the film were underwritten by Islay and Jura CVS - otherwise the young people put the whole thing together themselves, including carrying out beach cleans to get the necessary money together.  It is quite a stellar cast who will be present at the awards ceremony and the CVS is looking at ways and means of funding all the young people to get there. The awards organisers will pay for three to attend but we would like to get the whole group there if possible.  Any suggestions for possible funding routes will be gratefully accepted."
