Minimum Income Standards for Britain: addition costs for rural households

10-Jan-2008
The Centre for Research in Social Policy and York University are currently finalising a project commissioned by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation to develop minimum income standards for Britain. Further details are available on the project website: http://www.minimumincomestandard.org/index.html. The income standards have been developed based largely on work with English urban households. We’re aware that some families face particular, additional expenses, and that the largest group likely to face additional living costs are people in rural areas. Before we conclude the project we want to talk to people in rural areas to ‘map out’ the additional costs associated with living in rural areas. To do this, we are looking to meet with a rural community group - or similar - in Scotland (we have similar exercises happening elsewhere in the UK). Unfortunately, the timing for this is rather difficult as, if at all possible, we want to make this happen before the end of the month. Do you know of any local groups (5-10 people)which might be meeting or willing to meet in the next couple of weeks, and which might be willing to help? All participants in the project receive £25.
