National discussion is food for thought

Image of Cabinet Secretary Richard Lochhead and Nick Nairn at National Food Discussion launchA National Food Discussion has been launched by the Scottish Government, and they want to hear from you. The national discussion is the first step towards Scotland’s first national food policy, which will join up government policy on every part of the food chain from farm gate to plate.

As part of the discussion, the Scottish Government’s document Choosing the right ingredients: the future of food in Scotland sets out their vision for the country’s food industry and what needs to be done to achieve this goal.

The National Food Discussion was launched at a school breakfast club by Richard Lochhead Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs, chef Nick Nairn and football player from Hearts FC.

Cabinet Secretary Richard Lochhead said, "Scotland produces some of the finest food in the world but we need to tap into the full potential of this great resource for the benefit of everyone. We want to make sure we choose the right ingredients to make the most of Scotland's food.

"We want the freshest, finest future for Scottish food. Supporting food production and manufacturing in Scotland is in our national interest.

"Food is about so much more than what we eat. It is about jobs, the environment, tourism and the health of our nation."

Areas for change

Some ideas in the discussion paper Choosing the right ingredients include:

  • New traceability schemes so people know where their food comes from
  • Teaching children how to cook and helping them to learn about taste and nutrition at a younger age
  • The promotion and sale of more affordable, healthier, clearly labelled Scottish produce.
