Gateway seeks Project Scotland volunteer
Are you aged between 16 and 25? Are you looking for an exciting opportunity to gain great work experience? Would you like to help keep the Rural Gateway website up to date, write articles and be involved in developing new content for the site? Would you like to help set up a database for village halls and community buildings? Then the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations’ Rural Communities Researcher volunteering placement could be just the thing for you. The placement is currently being offered by Project Scotland.
What would I be doing?
The full-time Rural Communities Researcher placement will last for six months, and be based in SCVO’s office in Inverness. Half of the placement time will be spent with Rural Information Officer Sandra Hogg (also the Gateway’s funding expert) working on establishing a comprehensive database for village halls and community buildings in Scotland, and updating the Village Halls website.
The other half of the placement will be spent working with Norette Ferns, editor of the Rural Gateway website. You’d be helping to keep the site up to date by adding events to our calendar, documents to our library and links to our links section.
You'll also get the opportunity to research, write and prepare articles for the Rural Gateway site. The site covers a whole range of rural issues from transport to culture – so there are bound to be subjects to interest you. You will also be involved in developing new content for the site. We will want to hear your ideas!
Although the placement is mostly office based there will be a chance to get out and about and go to some conferences and events.
Am I right the person for the placement?
If you have good communication skills and good attention to detail then this could be for you. We are also looking for someone with a Higher Grade in English. We would like someone who can use a computer, but you don't have to be a technical computer whizz kid!
If you are interested in rural issues then that would be a bonus. You don’t have to have in-depth knowledge about rural issues – you’ll learn lots on the placement!
What do I get in return?
Project Scotland volunteers don’t get paid, but do get a £55 a week living allowance. You would also get travel expenses to and from the placement – so long as you use a reasonable method of transport.
You’ll develop skills such as developing databases, working with content management systems and writing for the web. You’ll also learn more about rural issues and the voluntary sector in rural areas. And it will be interesting - you’ll be able to come up ideas and put them into practice.
Want to know more?
If you want to know more about the placement please go to the Project Scotland website. If you have questions about the placement you can contact Norette Ferns by emailing editor@ruralgateway.org.uk.
