Get spring cleaning in April
Keep Scotland Beautiful are determined to involve as many people as possible in the 2008 National Spring Clean. Last year, over 11,500 volunteers picked up enough litter in spring clean month to cover the grass at Hampden with rubbish at least half a metre thick.
Organisers are now calling for volunteers to take part in clean up events being held around the Scotland, and for volunteers to organise their own events.
Lots of groups do clean ups throughout the year, but National Spting Clean is a chance for schools, youth groups, voluntary groups, communities and individuals to play an imporant part in a big, co-ordinated campaign.
Chief Executive of Keep Scotland Beautiful John Summers OBE said, "National Spring Clean made a welcome comeback in 2007. Not only does the involvement of the people of Scotland make a marked difference to the cleanliness and environmental standards of their neighbourhoods, but it also helps to kick start our summer tourist season by cleaning Scotland to a standard that both our residents and visitors deserve."
If you want to organise an event, all you have to do is pick a day in April and register your event on the Keep Scotland Beautiful website. You'll be issued with the information and materials you need.
This year, for the first time, the website has a clickable map which allows volunteers to find an event in their area more easily. And to tempt litter pickers, participants are able to enter a prize draw and photo competition, with prizes provided by Greggs. Don't forget you can also send your clean up photos to the Rural Gateway's photo competition. Find out more here.
