9 August 2007
Catch up with the latest news from the Rural Community Gateway

EDITOR'S NOTE
We'd like to get a better picture of the 'off-site' networking that
the Rural Gateway generates. We know that a lot of people who use
the site get in touch with people and projects they learn about on
the Gateway. We'd like to hear from you if you've been included in an
article on the Rural Gateway and received enquiries as a result or if
you've got in contact with an organisation or individual having seen
information about them on the Rural Gateway. Please email with your
examples of 'off-site' networking to
mailto@editor@ruralgateway.org.uk.
Unfortunately, the big news at the moment is the outbreak of Foot and
Mouth Disease in Surrey. The animal movement ban has now been relaxed
to allow animals to be taken directly to licensed abattoirs. See
http://www.ruralgateway.org.uk/item/1940
The DEFRA website has further information about the outbreak and
restrictions.
See http://www.defra.gov.uk/
And the Scottish Executive Foot and Mouth helpline is available at 0845
155 33 66.

PHOTO COMPETITION
John Riddle's 'Smoke gets in your eyes' has taken our photo
competition prize for July. His photo of someone driving a miniature
tractor at a steam fayre really stood out from the crowd.
See http://www.ruralgateway.org.uk/item/1918
Our July photo gallery is also on the site now, featuring the best of
that month's submissions to our competition.
See http://www.ruralgateway.org.uk/item/1925
Don't forget to send your photos on the theme 'Living in rural
Scotland' to mailto:editor@ruralgateway.org.uk.
OFF THE SHELF
There are hundreds of documents available to download from our
documents library, from consultation reports to community newsletters.
We've recently introduced a new monthly feature, Off the Shelf, where
we will highlight some new additions to our library.
For July's Off the Shelf see http://www.ruralgateway.org.uk/item/1917
CHARTER FOR RURAL COMMUNITIES REVIEWS
Over the next few weeks, the Rural Gateway will bring you reviews of
'A Charter for Rural Communities' from a range of people involved in
community development in rural Scotland. The charter is the final
report from the Carnegie Commission for Rural Community Development.
See http://www.ruralgateway.org.uk/item/1942
Pip Tabor, who works for the Southern Uplands Partnership, is our
first reviewer. What does he think about the charter and its
proposals for change? Find out here:

REGULAR FEATURES
Why not take part in one of our regular features? In Getting to know
you, you can tell us more about yourself and your area. And in Your
project, you can let the rest of rural Scotland know about the work
your community project does. It's easy to take part in both these
features. If you are interested, email
mailto:editor@ruralgateway.org.uk for more information.
EVENTS
Recently added events include a series of drop-in sessions on the
Cairngorms National Park Plan and a Horticulture and Garden Design
Open Day at Auchincruive Estate.
See http://www.ruralgateway.org.uk/information/events.html
WEB OF MONTH
Our website of the month for August is the Energy Savings Trust.
There is lots of information on this site about energy saving tips,
climate change and generating your own power.
