EDITOR'S NOTE
Congratulations to Austin Taylor. His photo 'Light Up' has been voted
the Rural Gateway Photo of the Year 2007. This spectacular shot was
taken at the Up-Helly-Aa festival in Lerwick Shetland and shows the
moment when the guizers light their torches. You can read more about
Austin's win here: http://www.ruralgateway.org.uk/item/2118
Our 'Living in rural Scotland' photo competition far exceeded our
expectations. We received wonderful submissions from all over the
country with subjects ranging from agricultural shows to mountain
climbing. Thanks to everyone who took part. And watch this space for
information on a competition for 2008.

VILLAGE HALLS SUMMIT
The Village Halls Summit in Aviemore on 23rd February will bring
together the people who run village halls and other community
facilities along with representatives from the organisations who fund
and support them. The keynote address will come from Richard Lochhead
MSP Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and the Environment. The
event is organised by the Scottish Council for Voluntary
Organisations and supported by the Scottish Government and Highlands and
Islands Enterprise.
The event is free, but places are limited so booking is essential.
Assistance may be available for essential travel and subsistence
for representatives of small community based voluntary
organisations.

HOUSING DEBATE RESULTS
Thanks to everyone who took part in our first ever Great Rural
Debate. The poll results are in, so you can find out how people voted
on the issue of restrictive planning and affordable housing. And it's not
too late to get involved with the debate. You can still let us know what
you think by adding your comments in the Great Rural Debate on Housing article.
See http://www.ruralgateway.org.uk/item/2092
I'll be feeding back the results
of the debate and all the comments to relevant agencies and Scottish
Government departments soon.

the Highlands (including Skye) has started. You can download the

VIEWS ON NEW LICENCING FEES
In our Rural Answers section, Heather Brass wants to know what you
think about proposed changes to licencing fees. She is very concerned
that the changes could lead to the closure of rural pubs and hotels.
She would like to hear from rural businesses such as public houses,
restaurants and licenced shops.
