Poverty, inequality and deprivation discussion extended
A discussion on how Scotland’s economic growth can be harnessed to make Scotland wealthier and fairer for all has been extended until 30th June 2008.The Scottish Government is seeking your views on the discussion paper ‘Tackling Poverty, Inequality and Deprivations’, which you can download from our documents library.
There are 880,000 individuals in Scotland living in relative poverty. That’s around 18 per cent of the population. Almost a quarter of households are fuel poor (24 per cent) and 8 per cent are extremely fuel poor.
The Scottish Government want your responses to questions such as:
- Where can the Scottish Government contribute most to tackling poverty?
- How should the Scottish Government best go about engaging with the wider public in its efforts to tackle poverty in Scotland?

Rural poverty – focus group wanted
The discussion paper states that while there is little difference between urban and rural areas in the prevalence of poverty, there may be some difference in how people in rural areas experience poverty, for example because some goods are more expensive and it is less convenient to access some services.
As part of the consultation, the Poverty Alliance are undertaking a series of focus groups. Sally MacKenzie from the Poverty Alliance wants to run some groups on the very specific issues of rural poverty. She is looking to meet with a group of 4 to 15 people. Sally can travel and she has a budget to cover costs associated with the focus group. So, if you run a group or network that would be interested in taking part in a focus group you can contact Sally on 0141 353 0440. Find out more in Sally's Rural Answers posting.
