Off the Shelf - May 2008

Most popular document of the year so far

The most popular document in 2008 so far is the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisation’s first Briefing Paper on the Scotland Rural Development Programme. Getting a Business Reference Number takes you through the first steps of applying to the Rural Priorities part of the SRDP. The document has been downloaded over 250 times already.

Scottish Fossil Code

Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) recently launched the Scottish Fossil Code – a must for anyone involved in, or interested in, the collection, identification and conservation of fossils.

The Code was produced with advice from paleontological researchers, land managers, collectors and others in interested in fossils. An interesting introduction includes sections on ‘What is a fossil?’ and ‘Where fossils are found’. There are codes for the collection and care of fossils, as well as a supplementary code for specialists and other groups such as commercial collectors and researchers. The final section looks at fossils and museums.

Village Halls Summit report now available

The Village Halls Summit held in Aviemore in February 2008 was a great success with around 250 delegates from all around the country attending. Demand for spaces at the conference was so high that many people were unable to get a place. Well, now you can read about what went on at the Summit by downloading the Village Halls Summit report from our library.

Included in the report are the presentations made on the day, including an edited transcript of the keynote speech from Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and the Environment Richard Lochhead. You can also find out what issues were raised in round table discussions.

Rural school closures consultation

The Scottish Government are urging teachers, parents, young people and anyone interested in rural schools to take part in their current consultation ‘Safeguarding our rural schools’.

In the consultation discussion document you can find out what the Scottish Government’s proposes. They want to safeguard the future of rural schools in Scotland and improve the school consultation process.
