Image of children with giant whale sculpture, courtesy of Scottish Seabird CentreThe Scottish Seabird Centre in North Berwick is celebrating Scottish Wildlife Month in June with an exciting programme of events and festivals throughout the month. The main event is the Wildlife Festival 14th-15th June, a celebration of wildlife and the natural world. It will include boat safaris around the islands of the Firth of Forth, beach walks, talks, exhibitions, displays and discovery to bring people closer to nature.

Lauder Live is two evenings of music and entertainment at Thirlestane Castle, Lauder. Come and have a picnic (bring your own, or buy food and refreshments) in the maginificent grounds of Thirlestane Castle, then enjoy an evening of music. See Lauder Live website for more details.

Austin Taylor is delighted to be hosting a Photographic Exhibition at Islesburgh Community Centre in Lerwick during June.  Austin said: "this is my first exhibition and it’s quite a big deal for me - by far the most difficult task was selecting which photos to show; now I’m just rushing to get the last minute details tied up!”  All the photographs were created in Shetland and the exhibition is arranged in four mini themes of seals and puffins; landscapes; sky scenes; and things in the landscape."  The exhibition runs from 1-28 June 2008 and full details of all the images are at the Austin Taylor Photography website.


A Community market at Mill of Logierait farm,  Logierait (beside the A9) took place on 17th May 2008. Stalls included bread, cakes, chocolate, delicatessen, plants, vegetables, eggs, hand made soap, motor collectibles, crafts and much more. There was also refreshments and music. This was the first in a series of summer markets run by Highland Perthshire Communities Partnership to promote local quality produce and products. Stalls are available for forthcoming markets. Dates of the rest of the market season are, 21st June, 19th July, 23rd August and 20th September.

Justsingin` and Friends Concert - An evening of song
Friday May 30th 2008 at 7.30pm in the Baronial Hall, Birnam House Hotel, Birnam, Perthshire, PH8 0BQ.  Everyone is invited to come along and celebrate community folk choir Justsingin`s fifth anniversary in the company of some great voices:

  • Sinsheen: Christine Kydd and Barbara Dymock, harmony vocal duo, Scottish ballad and song, the liveliest of live performances.
  • Rod Paterson: Celebrated performer of traditional song,often hailed as the finest Scottish folk singer of his generation.

We hold a Farmer's Market the 2nd Saturday of every month in Dalry Town Hall, near Castle Douglas.  Entrance is 50 pence which goes toward the upkeep of the Hall. 


Image of reenactment, courtesy of Lanark Medieval FestivalScotland’s national living history festival, the Lanark Medieval Festival, marks more than 1400 years of history in August. Held in the Royal Burgh of Lanark in rural South Lanarkshire on 16th and 17th August , this is the country’s largest re-enactment and living history event.

Last year it attracted more than 400 participants from 11 countries.
Visitors enter a time warp where they can see an authentic portrayal of our ancestors from the times of the Romans, Vikings, days of Wallace and Bruce and even Napoloeonic soldiers.

There are four battles daily, an international longbow competition for the Lanark Silver Arrow, tented history traders from as far away as Slovakia; historical craft demonstrators; Roman artillery; siege engine; Viking longship; medieval musicians, jesters, magician, storytellers, dancers, etc.

Kirriemuir Show takes place at Muirhead of Logie, Kirriemuir on Saturday 19 July 2008; a traditional agricultural show providing fun for all the family.

Classes - cattle, sheep, horses, goats, vintage vehicles and Ladies
Section.  Craft Marquee showcasing high quality handcrafted items as well as trade stands, a dog show and demonstrations of spinning,
weaving and needle felting.  Main Ring events include Jez Avery
motorcycle stunt display.

Festival season gets into full swing

We know you love a good music festival – they came top in our 100 Best things in rural Scotland poll – so we thought we’d give you a wee rundown of just some of the festivals coming up this summer. You can tell us about fesitvals in your area by adding a comment to this article. 

Rural Scotland’s many music festivals are a varied bunch and with the weather always being a bit predictable you never really know what you’re going to get! But whether it’s rock, reggae or ceilidh music you’re in to, you’re bound to come across something to get the toes tapping.
