Off the Shelf - June 2008

In Off the Shelf, we highlight some recent additions to our library. There are hundreds of documents in our library, from research documents to community newsletters. You can search our library by title or keyword, making it easier to find what you are looking for.
Final report from Committee of Inquiry on Crofting
Environment Minister Michael Russell has called the final report from the Committee of Inquiry on Crofting "the most significant report on crofting for the past half century". You can now find English language and Gaelic language versions of the final report in our library.
The report makes a number of recommendations including the abolition of the Crofters Commission and the creation of a new Federation of Local Crofting Boards. You can read more about the report and its recommendations in Warm welcome for radical report on crofting.
Post offices in North East, Tayside and Fife
As you may know Post Office Ltd are closing up to 2,500 branches throughout the UK in 2008. Following a national consultation they are now undertaking six-week local consultations around the country.
Post Office Ltd have published their proposed plans for closures in North East, Tayside and Fife. Some branches will be replaced with outreach services.You can find the document in our library.

Equal Opportunities in Rural Scotland
Earlier in 2008, the Highlands and Islands Equality Forum (HIEF) hosted an event in Inverness called ‘Equal Opportunities in Rural Scotland’. The event was sponsored by the Scottish Government and the Equality and Human Rights Commission.
You can find a full report from this one day conference in our documents library. The comprehensive report includes feedback from workshops and transcripts of speeches.
Morag Redwood, Project Leader at the HIEF has also written a special report for the Rural Gateway about the event and the work of HIEF called Special report: Equal opportunities in rural Scotland.
Remote and Rural Healthcare
The Scottish Government asked a team to consider ways of designing and maintaining services that can meet the healthcare needs of remote and rural areas. The Delivering for Remote and Rural Healthcare: What it means for you report includes the team’s recommendations.
