Colonsay wants new crofters
Would you like to join the island community of Colonsay? Would you like to be a croft tenant and build your own home? Are you motivated, resourceful and independent? The community of Colonsay, with the aid of the Scottish Land Fund, have bought an area of land which they intend to turn into five bareland crofts (without houses). They are currently looking for tenants for these crofts. Tenants will be able to build one dwelling house and might eligible for help with costs of construction.
The definition of crofting has broadened recently away from traditional agriculture to include any viable business. Applicants will be expected to submit a business plan. New businesses might be eligible for assistance from Highlands and Islands Enterprise. A transparent allocation policy will be applied. And although the island would like to see families joining the community, no-one will be ruled out.
Colonsay has a population of just over 100. The island is served by a ferry five times a week, three times in the winter. There is a primary school, shop, post office, tea shop and other seasonal enterprises. You can find out more about the island and see some stunning photographs at the Isle of Colonsay website.
