Car sharing could save money and planet
A new car-sharing scheme in the Highlands and Islands could save you money and help to save the planet. IfYouCareShare.com was could save the average commuter more than £1000 per year. The free scheme is being led by HITRANS (Highlands and Islands Transport Partnership) and ZetTrans (Shetland Islands Transport Partnership). Travellers can use the internet or phone a call centre to identify other people who are travelling the same route at a specified time, helping the environment and cutting fuel costs.
Councillor Duncan MacIntyre Chair of HITRANS said, "The saving for a daily commuter who shares a journey instead of driving alone averages over £1000 a year, but even sharing one-off journeys can deliver significant savings.
"Car sharing also helps the environment, with every journey shared saving greenhouse gas emissions and helping to ease the problems of global climate change. Getting involved with IfYouCareShare.com means you can save your pocket and the planet at the same time."
Tom Lane and Effie Ann MacQuarrie, S2 pupils at Paible Junior Secondary School on North Uist came up with the winning name – IfYouCareShare.com.
If you want to register with the scheme go to the IfYouCareShare.com website or call 0845 058 3926 to list the journeys you’d like to make. The system then matches this information with details of those already registered with the same travel needs.
You can register preferences, such as travelling with people of the same sex or non-smokers, and you always have the option of whether to participate in a particular arrangement or not.
